cleared. speaking of 66, eastbound lanes are open right here at the cedar lane overpass as you continue to make your way east of nutley treat no incidents as you percentage on to northbound 495. that is your fox 5 on time traffic. julie, thanks. -- candidates will face each other for governor in a debate tonight. bob mcdonald heads into that faceoff holding on to a comfortland lead over cree deed with 12% undecided. according to mason dixon poll. a state wide televised debate tonight at 8:00. voters go to the poll november 3. a new push for same-sex rights in the district. [chant] tens of thousands marched from the white house to the -- capitol on sunday for quality for gays and lesbians. they called for the president o to keep his promise to allow

gays to serve openly in the military. others called on all levels of government to make changes for equality. >> even though our marriage is valid because we got in before the deadline we get state marriage benefits but we don't get any federal benefits. >> gay people are just -- like everybody else and we deserve the same rights and our families are the same and they deserve the same protections. >> the d.c. council introduced a bill that would legalize marriage in the district and it is expected to pass. we're following developing news this morning. an 18-year-old is in critical condition after being shot by somebody on a bicycle. it happened about 6:30 last night on 10th street northeast not far from capitol hill. sarah simmons is live on the scene this morning with the latest on this. sarah? >> >> the street is pretty quiet now but this is just off a very

busy 8th street corridor, a hussein corridor through here. we're in the block north of this -- there. it is pretty bizarre when you hear did you how it went down. they say the 18-year-old was shot by two people on bicycles rolling through the neighborhood here last night about 6:30 in the 800 block of 10th street northeast of here. police say the 18-year-old who we understand is still in critical condition was shot in the chest but was conscious while being taken to the hospital. we do understand police are telling us that he was not from the area, the victim, that is. at this point they still don't know a motive for this shooting. but they are still of course looking into it. there is not a lot to go on right now. they are still investigating. trying to figure out exactly who the two assailants were. we're hoping since the 18-year- old is still in the hospital, hopefully, at some point investigators are thinking maybe they will be able to talk with him. get more information. but at this time police are still in the very early stages of this developing story, trying to figure out exactly

the motive behind this shooting. we're live in northeast, sa ra simmons, fox 5 news. back to you. sarah, thanks. meantime family and friends of a teen gunned down in northeast washington are pleading for anybody who saw that to come forward. kenyatta's family's mother held a vigil at the playground where her daughter lost her life. two masked men shot her in the head. there are no suspects and no clues. >> we don't have the any answers and i know there are some answer answers out there and i am begging the community, the residents of this complex. those who saw something, because i am quite certain, they saw something. and the persons that did it, please, i beg you, i beg you to turn yourselves in. investigators say while two -- armed security officers asked nonresidents to leave the property two masked men ran

through the area and fired if he guards. a stray bullet hit kenyatta stanley. and a bethesda man was hit inside the head by a stray bullet inside his garage. the victim had just returned home from work and had pulled into the garage on millwood terrace when somebody shot him. modi works for the international monetary fund. police don't know if the job had anything to do with the ot the state of the redskins not a good one tonight after -- this morning after another loss to another bad team. the redskins down in carolina where they fell to the previously winless carolina panthers 20-17. the redskins led 17-2 early in the third quarter but the panthers scored the game's final 18 points. the redskins now 2-3 and face another winless team this coming sunday in the kansas city chiefs. a melt down after four weeks of so-so performances on the field. even in victory the fans at

road and crashed. one teacher died and half the students were taken to the hospital. they were returning from a competition when the bus driver had a medical condition. the teacher grabbed the steering wheel but fell out a window when the bus rolled over. 19 people are dead following a series of car bombings in anbar province. the first car was near iraq i headquarters in ramadi. the second went off as people went to help. and the third exploded outside a hospital. the bombs were rigged to explode at precisely timed intervals to maximize deaths. a province official says it doesn't appear to be the work of al-qaeda. and a call for more troops from afghanistan from the head of the senate intelligence committee. senator diane feinstein says the mission is in serious jeopardy and more troops are needed to turn th tide against taliban. president obama and his war council are currently wrestling with troop levels.

5:12. welcome back. 5:00tive on this monday morning. a lot of folks have the day off today. will they get a nice day to enjoy? >> depends on what you consider nice. >> if you like the fall conditions? >> if you like cool weather. >> if you like clouds? >> okay. it will be nice today. this is a real week of transition. we're going to see unusually cool temperatures. even today's high is going to be well below normal. but take a look at the temperature trend for this week. today we're talking about a high only in the low 60s. tomorrow the warmest day of the week, up to around 71 degrees. slightly above normal. then yeah, wednesday and thursday, those are the projected highs. for -- wednesday and thursday. 58degrees wednesday. that's 10 degrees below normal. 55degrees for thursday. more than 10 degrees below normal. so very cool weher on the way. and likely some rain for the latter part of the week as

well. all right. take a look at the current temperatures around the region. right now in washington we have got 51 degrees, we have dropped off now. 46 in frederick. 49 in aagers town, annapolis at 54 degrees. quantico 55degrees. fredericksburg at 52 degrees at this hour. here's a look at the satellite radar for the region. a lot of clouds in over us this morning. participate -- precipitation over in western ports of pennsylvania. a lot more precip to the south and west. that for the most part remains to the south. what does move to the north stays well out to our west so, we don't expect that precipitation today. but this storm system is partially the reason we will see cooler temperatures during the course of this week. for today here's what we're looking at. a lot of clouds. sigh them there. more clouds and sun today and a cool day, our high temperature about 8 degrees below norm. 61degrees for your high in town today. a little breezy, winds out of the northeast, 5 to 10 miles an hour. for tonight a cool night as well with mostly cloudy skies.

light volume across the potomac. that's a check of your fox 5 on time traffic. now to the latest swine flu fears about the new vaccine. the u.s. health officials are trying to clear up some misinformation. they are downplaying the vaccine's risk factors. the cdc says a good safety record from past vaccines bodes well for the swine flu vaccine. the government maintains vaccines are the best way to protect yourself from the flu. in many cases classrooms are the front lines for the fight to stop swine flu or h1n1. >> but many school districts have few if any school nurses recognize or respond to flu breakouts. fox's laura ingle has the details. >> reporter: -- school kids across the nation may not get the medical care on campus if they need if they come down with symptoms of the h1n1 virus. many in the medical community say the student-to-school nurse ratio is staggering in some states. for example, in utah, the average ig only one school

nurse to every 5,000 students. and many believe that ould be a recipe for disaster, when it comes to stopping the spread of h1n1 on school campuses. >> this might sting a little bit. >> there are other reons school nurses are needed more than ever. >> the role of the school nurse has significantly changed over the years. school nurses treat scrapes bumps and bruises. but they also work the front lines of disease prevention. and these days, that can mean assessing and treating life threatening medical conditions. school nurses work with kids who have chronic illnesses. things like asthma and diabetes. seizures. they make sure those kids are healthy and ready to learn. >> and what happens to these -- children when they don't feel well. they go home. they are losing educational time. if there is a nurse in the building they can be evaluated. >> a 2008 survey by the national association of school nurses found that only 45% of public schools have their own fulltime nurse. another30% have a part-time nurse. and 25% of schools don't have

school nurses at all. the national association of school nurses also encourages every parent to ask their school administrator if there is a nurse on staff. many mes, there is not. come means school staff that may not be medically trained must handle health emergencies. >> laura ingle reporting. when you think of job security in a bad economy you might think labor unions are create stable for their members. but that is not always the case. some unions are not as powerful as they used to be when budgets are tig, contract negotiations get even tougher. when there is just no money. really not a lot to negotiate about. >> denver police officers clearly got the message. voting to delay pay raises scheduled for 2010 and 2011. mayor john hicken looper went to the police union with cap in hand. help the mile high city survive the recession or else. >> it would mean we would lay off somewhere around 90 police officers. >> in an open letter to the city council and taxpayers hick

be -- hickenlooper wrote, remember we're experiencing the worst drop in city revenue since 1933. >> unions are begging right now. anyone asking for raise is begging right now. >> our membership is growing. >> like many unions nationwide the colorado education association is getting large we are. expect with democrats in control at the federal and much of the state level it would seem unions might have more clout. >> you are not going to get more. you're more likely to get less no matter how much muscle you flex. >> despite receiving a share of federal stimulus money, three of colorado's largest school districts still have not agreed on contracts with their teachers. something traditionally done by the first day of school. >> the districts are keeping a portion of that money. they are afraid abt the future. >> anything else for you? >> there you go. >> we really hope there won't be a strike. >> the union representing colorado workers at some of the nation's big grocery chains has threatened just that. after members repeatedly rejected coany offers. >> i think it is a little

pretty amazing scene caught on camera in ohio. a shootout inside a bar that looks like something straight out of the wild, wild west. this is how it went down on thursday. neighbors are still worried the bar is still open. despite the show down that pitted five gunmen against unknown targets. investigators think it was drug- related and that is why the community is soup set. >> it is a little disturbing. i thought maybe this will shut it down. it was operating under the impression it was so -- that is a little disturbs. >> we should have some type of mechanism, to make sure there

are no guns on the premises. innocent people can be hurt. a bullet doesn't have any name on it. >> there were five gunmen. none of them have been caught. amazingly noened was hurt despite all of that gunfire. instead of marrying the love of his life man down in florida will bury his fiancie. he thought somebody was breaking in his home so he grabbed his gun and started shooting. turned out the person was his fiancie. bullets hit her in the chest. that was one day before their wedding. he has not been charged. and elvis presley's nch in mississippi is up for sale. apparently people from all over the world are inquiring about it. that property has been up for sale in the past but nobody has pursued any plans to develop the area. making headlines this morning, a shooting not far from the u.s. capitol. >> sarah simmons is on that story for us this morning. teenager is shot by two people. but it is how the suspects left the scene that is rather unusual.

tonight. bob mcdonnell heads into the faceoff holding on to a comfortableead over democrat creigh deeds. according to mason dixon poll it is a state wide televised debate. it airs at 8:00 tonight. voters head to the polls on november 3. a massive push for same-sex rights as tens of thousands came to march across the district. [chanting] they marched from the white house to the capital sunday demanding equality for gays and lesbians across the country. the protesters called on president obama to keep his promise to allow gays to serve openly in the military. others marched to urge action on issues such as repealing the defense of marriage act. >> even though our marriage does remain valid because we got in before the deadline, we get state marriage benefits but we don't get any federal witches >> as an american you have to stand up for what you believe in and that everybody deserves rights. >> last week the d.c. council introduced a bill that would

legalize same-sex marriage in the district. it is expected to pass. we are following developing news in the district in 8 -- an 18-year-old is fighting for his life after being shot by someone ride on the grounden a bicycle. >> this happened around 6:30 on 10th street northeast just beyond the northern edge of capitol hill. sarah simmons is live -- at the scene with more details. sarah good morning. >> reporter: good morning, steve. this is just a block north of 8th street which is a very busy main corridor through this neighborhood. so investigators are wonder if maybe somebody saw something lastight. especially given the somewhat unusual nature of the crime. this 18-year-old, was shot by police say two people on bicycles. this was at 6:30 last night here on 10th street in the 800 block northeast. police say the 18-year-old who was in critical condition, we understand at this point, was shot in the chest. but was taken to the hospital, he was conscious. but the thing is, police say he was not from the -- area here

and they are still unclear as to a motive for this shooting. right now they don't have a lot of to go on. they are still looking into this. there is no description of the suspects. but, again, with this just being right off 8th street investigators are possibly looking into the fact that maybe somebody saw something. and are hoping they can give police a call and help them out. reporting live here in northeast, sa ra simmons, fox 5 news. a mother pleads for answers in the death of her teenage daughter. with prayers and heavy hearts family and friends gathered at lay ground in northeast washington to remember 17-year- old kenyatta's family. her family says that they know someone saw something and they won't give up until her killer is brought to justice. >> it is not easy to rest when a coldblooded killer is out there. i can't bring my daughter back, but maybe, if this person is caught, they can save someone else's life. i am wondering when is enough going to be enough? when is it really enough?

making headlines this morning a warning and a call for more troops in afghanistan is now coming from a key democrat. senator diane feinstein says the mission in afghanistan is in serious jeopardy and that more troops are needed to turn the tide against the taliban. feinstein's position puts her at odds with fellow democrats who want a more methodical strategy. >> don't send more combat troops but i say focus on the afghan -- forces. the army, faster, larger, better equipped. without better security the training element will fail. that's exactly what happened in afghanistan. we need more combat power. >> the diverging opinions come as president obama and his war council wrestle with how many more troops might be needed in the now 8-year afghanistan conflict. tomorrow, the $829 billion health overhaul bill faces a financial committee vote but comes as the insurance industry steps up its criticism of the bill. it claims the legislation would shift costs to privately insure people raising the price of a typical policy by hundreds if

welcome back. 5:53. time to play monday morning quarterback with our man dave ross. i think the most disappointing thing about yesterday is after 10 minutes into the game redskins were on top and carolina looked like the worst football team in the league. they could not do anything -- right and i thought it would be the redskins day. >> another week of another team getting healthy at the expense of the washington redskins. and again steve this is an amazing thing. yesterday the redskins played pretty wl. i think a little bad luck played into this one. that is wha happens to bad teams. one thing goes against you and all of a sudden you can't find a way to win. you find a way to lose. let's take a look at highlights. it did start off very well for
